Introduction to Worldwide Health News...
The sky is the limit. We hope you join us on this journey.
Most people aspire to live long, healthy and happy lives. It was Dr. Albert Schweitzer that once said: “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” By that metric, the two of us, Omer Awan, MD, MPH and David R. Campbell, MD, FAAOS, are rich with happiness. We want to share our success with others. That is why we co-founded Worldwide Health News.
Every time Dr. Awan opens his browser, he is literally amazed to see what people are writing, explaining, and advocating for. Some articles and posts on social media are inspiring. They motivate him to change his diet, exercise more, avoid harmful lifestyle choices, and bring joy to his family. A daily boost in his motivation to get healthier comes from staying up to date with medical literature. It also reinforces his lifelong goal to be the best physician possible.
Dr. Campbell has a few more years under his belt. He is an orthopedic surgeon subspecializing in spine surgery, with a busy clinical practice in South Florida. At last count, he had performed upwards of 10,000 spine surgeries. Dr. Campbell has also been covering national and international health news for nearly a decade, advancing over the years to medical contributor for MSNBC and NBC, as well as landing in the role, ascribed to him by Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, as the Chief Medical Correspondent of Morning Joe. That position has taken him literally across the world, reporting from Poland near the Ukrainian border, to Romania, Haiti, Washington D.C and the Pentagon, and much more. The capstone of his reporting career was an in-depth interview with Dr. Anthony Fauci in the summer of 2023, overlooking the United States Capitol building, to discuss the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief-PEPFAR.
Dr. Awan is a practicing radiologist physician and a public health/healthcare contributor for Forbes.com. He frequently provides expert analysis on various news media outlets on some of the most important health issues our nation faces. Dr. Awan has a YouTube channel entitled “MedEdPage” where he regularly posts public health videos seeking to make complex topics simple for the public to understand. He is an educator through and through, and it shows. You find those videos here.
When Dr. Awan is reading other posts, he can be utterly shocked at the information that gets propagated to thousands upon thousands, even millions of unsuspecting people. One example that he shares is the idea that vaccines can cause autism. That propaganda and conspiracy claim has long since been scientifically debunked. There are, of course, no real scientific date to substantiate that bogus claim, but untold number of Americans actually believe this false claim.
There are countless other claims with respect to medicine, healthcare, and public health that have been propagated online, passed by word of mouth like that game of “telephone”, to become part of the fabric of a misled society. We aim to fight back against false science and educate the public through simple, sound, rational, accurate reporting and analysis. Collectively, our professional training, experience and expertise runs the gamut from surgery, radiology, and public health. We are compelled by our adherence to concepts of medical ethics to articulate and share best practices with respect to health. We want to do our part and educate all who will listen, read, or watch Worldwide Health News.
This is precisely why we have founded and launched this educational initiative.
